Antral Diaphragm or Web

 

     A membrane with a variably-sized opening in the antrum of the stomach

     May occur from 3 months to 80 years

     Histologically

            • Mucosa around a central core of submucosa and muscularis mucosae

     Usually no inflammation of the web itself

     Usually located from 1 to 1.5 cm proximal to pyloric canal

X-ray

            • Persistent, thin, band-like deformity perpendicular to the long axis of the antrum

            • Usually 2-3 mm thick

            • Associated ulcers are found in 30-50% of patients

     Rx: May be intentionally ruptured with an endoscope
